Packt Publishing recently sent me a copy of the book “Symfony 1.3 Web Application Development” to review.
This book is not a reference guide, but an example driven tutorial that takes you through the process of building Model-View-Controller-based web applications. You will learn how to create and develop a simple online store application. It also covers best practices for better and quicker application development.
The book is based on the latest version of the Symfony Framework, and does a great job telling you what you get out of the box and how it works, which is perfect for hitting the ground running. During the development you are introduced to the concepts and features of the MVC framework. However, for those who want to know more about the framework, the book doesn’t explain how things work under the covers. This book is more for beginners who want to get started with Symfony 1.3.
One thing I didn’t like about this book is that it uses Propel instead of Doctrine as the default ORM framework. Apart from that, it does a great job explaining and demonstrating with practical examples how to build a Web application from scratch.
Overall, and considering that some of the topics in this book have already been covered in Practical Symfony 1.3, I rate this book 3.5 out of 5.
phpShop is a PHP-powered shopping cart application. It is released under the GNU General Public License. The primary purpose of phpShop is to provide a simple shopping cart solution that is easy to customize to suit any purpose. phpShop has less features that many other shopping cart applications, but is generally easier to customize. All that is required to effectively customize phpShop is a basic knowledge of HTML, PHP, and SQL.
phpShop is written in PHP and therefore requires the PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor. phpShop also requires a database; phpShop currently supports MySQL for this purpose.
The original developers of phpShop needed to build a shopping cart web site. A search for an open source solution was conducted and it was found that several solutions were available. However, they found that many of the solutions were much too primitive. Other solutions were fairly complete but much too complicated to learn since they used their own tag language or were based on early CGI scripting languages. And most importantly, the solutions were dificult to customize. What the developers really needed was a shopping cart that:

File uploads are disabled by turning off permissions on the associated directories. Don't try to upload files please - error message will result.

A remotely exploitable security vulnerability has been discovered where any table configured within Interchange could be viewed remotely by an unauthenticated user, by using a specially crafted search request.
This vulnerability affects all previous versions of Interchange. Even without using the search structure provided in the default install, your catalog could still be vulnerable.
To protect against exploits, we strongly recommend all public Interchange sites upgrade and use the new configuration directive AllowRemoteSearch.
